Size a coop by multiplying the number of birds by their floor space: 0.4 m² per standard chicken, 0.3 m² per bantam, 0.5 m² per duck, 0.8 m² per turkey and 0.1 m² per quail. Add an outdoor run of 1-2 m² per chicken, one nesting box for every 3-4 hens, and raise the coop 30-45 cm on posts or a stone foundation.

Coop design is the arithmetic of floor space, run area and fittings that keeps a flock uncrowded, dry and out of reach of predators.

Crowding Is The Quiet Failure: Pecking, Stress, Disease And Fewer Eggs

Overcrowding causes pecking, stress, disease and reduced egg production. The minimums are floor-space figures per bird, and the safe way to use them is to build for the larger flock you expect, not the one you start with. “When in doubt, build bigger” is the working rule.

What You Need

  • The planned flock by species
  • A tape and a pencil for the sums below
  • Building materials for a raised, dry, sealed floor and walls (see Basic Box Construction for methods that also suit small buildings)
  • Hardware cloth for run and openings

Method: Size The Coop

Step 1: List the flock. Write down how many birds of each type you plan to keep, including the growth you expect in the first year.

Step 2: Multiply for floor area. Chickens: 0.4 m² (standard) or 0.3 m² (bantam). Ducks: 0.5 m². Turkeys: 0.8 m². Quail: 0.1 m².

Step 3: Size the run. Allow 1-2 m² per chicken. A fenced garden perimeter for true free-range is ideal but raises predator risk.

Step 4: Count nest boxes. One nest box per 3-4 hens, 30×30×30 cm each.

Step 5: Raise the floor. Elevate the coop 30-45 cm on posts or a stone foundation. Dry air under the floor stops damp and removes a hiding place. See Predator-Proofing on what elevation does and does not stop.

Worked Example

A flock of 12 standard chickens. Coop floor = 12 × 0.4 = 4.8 m². Run = 12 × 1 = 12 m² up to 12 × 2 = 24 m². Nest boxes = 12 / 4 = 3 up to 12 / 3 = 4 boxes.

A mixed flock of 8 standard chickens and 4 bantams. Floor = 8 × 0.4 + 4 × 0.3 = 3.2 + 1.2 = 4.4 m². Run = 12 birds × (1 to 2) = 12 to 24 m². Nest boxes for 12 hens = 3 to 4.

Common Mistakes

  • Sizing for today’s flock only — chicks and replacements arrive; plan for the larger number.
  • No elevation — a floor on the ground rots and invites rats.
  • Counting the run as coop space — the run is for daytime; the coop floor figure is for the night and bad weather.

Safety

Dust and ammonia when cleaning

Cleaning a closed coop stirs up dry droppings and ammonia. Open the vents first, wear a cloth mask, and wet the litter slightly before forking it out.
