Scale: 1 Family, Comfortable | Timeframe: First year

Phase 2 is the first full year, and it moves a family from the improvised fixes of Phase 1 to a working homestead: real food production instead of just salvaged and foraged meals, real housing instead of a semi-permanent shelter, and the schooling, medicine, and security a homestead running on its own needs once outside help isn’t coming. The eleven domains split into four jobs: growing and keeping food, building and running the physical place to live, running the human side of a household, and making the raw materials everything else is built from.

Agriculture, Livestock & Animal Husbandry, and Food Processing & Preservation are the food chain, end to end. Agriculture covers crop rotation, composting, seed saving, beekeeping, and aquaculture. Livestock covers keeping and breeding chickens, goats, cattle, pigs, fish, and bees, plus the seed-genetics side of selective breeding. Food Processing turns what both of those produce into food that keeps — fermenting, drying, salting, smoking — without refrigeration.

Housing, Energy, and Transportation build and run the physical homestead. Housing moves past a first tent or lean-to into earthbag and straw bale walls, gravity-fed plumbing, and composting toilets. Energy covers wind and micro-hydro power, solar thermal collectors, firewood and peat fuel, and the heat storage and towers that deliver it. Transportation moves people, loads, and water without fuel — bicycles, carts, draft animals, pack saddles, sleds, and small watercraft.

Education, Medicine, and Security are the human systems a homestead running on its own needs. Education rebuilds a full teaching system from counting and measurement through alphabets and record keeping. Medicine covers field care — dentistry, midwifery, nutrition, veterinary work, lens grinding, and sterilizing instruments by hand. Security covers detecting threats early, building a layered perimeter, training guard dogs, and planning caches and escape routes.

Materials & Crafts and Textiles are the two raw-material tracks underneath all of it. Materials & Crafts works clay, glass, metal, leather, rope, and wood from raw material to finished tool, and Textiles turns plant stalks into cordage and fiber through retting, scutching, hackling, and spinning.
