Keep a physical object that connects you to your life before, such as a photo, a ring or a letter, and look at it every day, so that the person you were does not dissolve into the role of survivor. You are a specific person with a history, skills, preferences and relationships, and that person is the one doing the surviving.
A personal object, deliberate memory and familiar habits keep the person you were present in the person who is surviving.
The Old Self Is A Resource, Not Only A Loss
A kept sense of who you were carries your skills, values and reasons. It reminds you what you are surviving for. If you lose it, the days narrow to tasks, and the question “why bother” has nothing to answer it.
Method: Practices That Keep The Link
Step 1: Choose an object One thing that stands for people or a life you value. Keep it safe and visible.
Step 2: Look at it daily At the same time each day, such as the evening review. Hold it if you can.
Step 3: Remember on purpose Recall a person, a place, a skill, a joke. Say or write it. Concrete detail works better than a general feeling.
Step 4: Keep a habit from before A way you made breakfast, a tune you hummed, a prayer, a stretch, a task you were good at.
Step 5: Use your skills Do something your old life trained you for, even if only a small part of it.
Step 6: Write what you want to tell people Letters you may never send, or a record for whoever comes later. It keeps your relationships present.
When The Memories Hurt
Looking at a photo or remembering someone can bring grief, sometimes strongly. That does not mean it is wrong to do it. Let the feeling come, in a safe place, and then return to a routine task. If grief is overwhelming, stops you functioning for days or is mixed with thoughts of harming yourself, see Warning Signs in Yourself and get help from anyone you can reach.
Common Mistakes
- Putting every reminder away to avoid pain — you lose the link.
- Living only in the past — keep the link and keep the routine.
