Personal hygiene is one of the first things to slip when morale falls, and the slip then makes morale worse, so keep it up deliberately: wash your face and hands every day with whatever water you have, keep your living space organised, groom to whatever extent is practical, and wash or change clothing regularly. These actions protect health and keep your picture of yourself as a capable person.
Washing, tidiness and grooming are among the first things to slip when morale drops, and the slip then lowers morale further.
A Feedback Loop In Both Directions
Low mood makes washing and tidying feel pointless. Skipping them makes you feel dirtier, more unlike yourself and more demoralised, which lowers mood further. The loop can be run in the other direction: a wash and a tidy corner are easy wins that lift the day a little.
Method: A Minimum Daily Set
Step 1: Wash face and hands Even cold water. Do it at the same time each morning.
Step 2: Clean your teeth With a chewed twig or a cloth if you have no brush.
Step 3: Keep the living space organised One consistent place for each thing. Outer order supports inner order.
Step 4: Groom as far as is practical Comb hair, trim nails, shave or tidy a beard if you want to.
Step 5: Wash or change clothing regularly Dry and air bedding when the weather allows.
Step 6: Wash your whole body when conditions allow Safety first: do not strip in cold, wet or windy weather where you could chill.
For the health side, including handwashing with ash or sand when soap is unavailable, see Personal Hygiene.
Why It Counts As Morale, Not Vanity
These routines maintain your self-image as a capable person and not a victim. They also give the day small completed tasks and mark the transition from sleep to work.
Common Mistakes
- Dismissing it as trivial — it is one of the first signs of slipping. See Warning Signs in Yourself.
- Washing in a way that chills you — in cold conditions, wash in parts and dry quickly.
- Using up scarce water — a face and hands wash needs very little.
